A common consumer complaints are usually about the price and “why are mattresses so expensive”. But are they really? Simple math seems to says otherwise.
Comparisons
For example, the average price of a new car is around $33,500. With financing, that’s about $92 a day per year. And how long do you typically spend in your car each day? Two, three hours tops?
Now, let’s see how this compares to mattresses. The average price for a new, high quality mattress in retail store is around $2,500. But let’s go a little higher. With financing, a $5,000 mattress comes out to $2.92 a day per year for about 5 years. That means a $1,000 CRaVE Mattress comes out to $0.55 a day for 5 years.
In reality, most people keep their mattress for 8 years equaling just $0.35 a day. And if you are sleeping with a partner that is just $0.175 cents a day per person. Would you rather pay $1,000, or just 17 cents a day?
Perspective
But wait, there’s more! If people sleep for an average of 8 hours a night, that’s 10 full days a month they will spend on their mattress. Over the course of their life, they will sleep for 229,961 hours, which comes out to about 1/3 of their entire life.
Sleep is essential and beds help bring better sleep, so they are an important product for the health of the consumer. Aren’t you worth 35 cents a day?
Higher Prices Do Not Mean Better Sleep
One of the biggest complaints when buying a mattress is price, and figuring out why are the mattresses so expensive.
This is usually attributed to large markups, which depends on the brand. In addition to manufacturing cost, there is marketing cost, retail markup, and sales commissions.
Huffington Post recommends staying in the $500 - $1200 range as anything over that price doesn’t necessarily indicate better quality or better sleep, and probably has the same amount of cushioning and support as more expensive mattresses.
Do you really need gold-plated corner guards, intricately embroidered labels and tricky sales tactics?
How about gel infused foam, European pillow top, Dunlop vs Talalay, and mini coils?
It’s enough to make your head spin and most people don’t know what they mean. These features don’t result in an improved sleeping experience. It is just another reason to add extra margin to the sale.
